Finding the Best Medical Information Online

Title: Finding the Best Medical Information Online

Disease Illness Finding the Best Medical Information Online

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 18, 2013

The Pew Internet & American Life Project (a project of the Pew Research Center) conducted a survey of 3,014 adults living in the U.S. to determine their use of online resources in the search for health information in the past year. (go to: goo.gl/Sc43T)

Im not at all surprised at these results, says Dr. Ourian. I expect the numbers will grow every year. The most important thing for consumers to realize is that the internet is not a substitute for visiting their physician. I believe that to be especially true for anyone interested in cosmetic treatments or plastic surgery.

While the internet is a fantastic resource, a physician is often necessary to assist the patient in separating information that is valid and pertinent from that which is erroneous and inapplicable. In some cases though, its the internet that can help keep patients away from unscrupulous practitioners. Just this month the U.S. Food & Drug Administration released on their website a list of 350 medical practices nationwide that were warned about their purchase of unapproved Botox from a Canadian Pharmacy (go to: goo.gl/DwRuo).

For cosmetic patients, continues Dr. Ourian, the internet can be an especially confusing place. Though generally speaking cosmetic patients are not ill, cosmetic treatments are medical and need to be performed by properly trained and licensed individuals in a sterile setting.

It is very common for cosmetic patients to use sites that accumulate the experiences of other cosmetic patients as part of their overall decision making process. Valid or not, consumers believe theyre more likely to get objective information about side effects, cost and recovery time for treatments such as laser skin resurfacing and stretch mark removal.

As I stated earlier, there is no substitute for visiting a physician. That is even more true for cosmetic patients, as few people can be subjective about their own appearance. I dont want this to be a barrier for anyone, so at Epione we offer free consultations.

Disease Illness Gruv Gear Launches “Sessions” Featuring Exclusive Live Studio Performances By Renowned Musicians

Orange County, CA (PRWEB) November 20, 2012

Three of the artists original compositions were recorded live in Anaheim California for this premier release. Originally scheduled to be a bass guitar duet as a co-marketing campaign with bass maker Skjold Design Guitars, with whom both bassists have built signature instruments, the addition of Ricky Lawson was a welcome and pleasant surprise.

We had arranged Damian and David to be at the studio that week, recalls Jay Baldemor, President of Gruv Gear. It was literally just the day before that we were finalizing Rickys artist endorsement. We were sitting in his studio and I was admiring his wall of gold and platinum records, including Michael Jacksons Bad album in which Ricky played the tour, Lionel Richies Dancing on the Ceiling, and Whitney Houstons I Will Always Love You. The question regarding laying some drums on the session came up casually towards the end of the visit, and Ricky graciously accepted. The following morning he showed up and the guys gelled as if theyve been playing together for years!

David and Damian had previous ad hoc jams at music events before, but this was to be their first formal recording together. David brought his usual ferocious funk/jazz vibe to the mix, hailing from decades of experience with the likes of Pieces of a Dream, Lalah Hathaway, Jonathan Butler, New Kids On The Block, and George Duke. Damians brooding melodic approach and chordal work complement the otherwise unusual duet of instruments in the same sonic register. Damian draws from a diverse palette as well, boasting touring and recording credits with the Peter Erskine New Trio, Les McCann & Javon Jackson, Gino Vannelli, and the Jaco Pastorius Big Band, to name a few. The unique combination of musicalities was captured within two short hours, and came out so well that it required hardly any post-production audio work. Erskines composition titled Bestowal kicks off the first of this 3-part session series, with subsequent songs to be released every two weeks.

The debut installment of Gruv Gear Sessions can be found at http://www.gruvgear.com/sessions. High-resolution MP3s and videos are also being made available as free downloads to enjoy in your iPods and iPads.

Disease Illness New Project Saves the Human Experience of the 20th Century

Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) January 29, 2013

While more baby boomers are using 21st century technology to share todays photos with iPhones and tablets, let us not forget that these same people and their parents were also the first generations to record their human experience, using 20th century cameras.

These vintage images belong to real 20th century heroes the people who built our roads, fought for our freedom in World War II, raised their families during the space age and served in Vietnam.

This irreplaceable history, recorded in deteriorating analog format, contains defining moments and life lessons our children need more than at any other time in history.

The threat of losing this valuable body of history is real.

Even more troubling, those who have it in their possession are least experienced with managing digital media.

The Living Legacy Project is a global initiative to teach seniors how to scan, archive, give voice to their vintage photos and to make available professional assistance where needed.

Tom Cormier and Dennis Stack, co-founders of the Living Legacy Project and its official online archive, LegacyStories.Org, recognized the lack of a scalable process to save this world treasure.

The vast majority of human history will go undocumented, thrown into dumpsters as thousands of seniors pass away each day, says Cormier. Without a systematic approach that can be duplicated quickly, there will be millions of family heroes going unnoticed at a time when our children need it most.

The Projects methodology is comprised of two main elements:

1. A legion of trained advisors to systematically teach and assist seniors to scan their photos and record their oral narrative describing the people and events only they could know.

2. A cloud-secured online research library where the [talking photos can be backed up and shared in a modern format familiar to todays youth, to be accessed by families, educators and genealogists.

The Project has established Pict-oral history programs in senior living communities, ethnic groups, faith-based congregations, etc., as a means to reach the most endangered personal history.

“I enjoy taking my grandchildren to traditional Dutch Christmas celebrations and listening to Dutch music, seeing them enjoy my culture,” says Antonia Kersting Salomone, a member of The Netherland Club. “My talking pictures help them feel the emotion of what I experienced as a child, teaching them to be proud of their heritage, as I am.”

The Project offers new career opportunities for people who enjoy listening and working with seniors.

Disease Illness PATS Member Kelly Unruh Assist Utility Workers During the Aftermath of Hurricane Sandy

East Stroudsburg, PA (PRWEB) December 19, 2012

In the early morning hours of Monday, October 29th 2012 Hurricane Sandy slammed the densely populated areas of the northeast as a Category 1 hurricane. High winds and rain left thousands of people without power, for days and weeks at a time. This storm demonstrated the complex physical challenges that utility workers regularly face and must overcome, just to keep the power on. A persons quality of life diminishes rather quickly without electricity because they can no longer provide heat, use water or appliances that many people rely on for their basic needs. Utility lineman and electricians often face these very complicated, intricate issues and regularly overcome these physically exhausting challenges.

Fortunately, the highly skilled workers at two northeastern power companies PECO energy and PP&L have regular access to athletic trainers to help keep them performing at a high levels because of the health care services provided by Mrs. Kelly Unruh and her colleagues at CIP Solutions. These companies were quick to recognize just how expensive it is to have a highly trained, highly specialized employee out due to an injury.

Time lost equals greater time with power lost which ultimately leads to revenue lost. Our main goal is to bridge the gap between suffering an injury and making a full and complete recovery, by working closely with the client within their specific work setting guiding them safely every step of the way. Mrs. Kelly Unruh, CIP Solutions. The industrial athletic trainer spends a good portion of their time working on injury prevention and immediate care to help prevent small injuries from becoming more serious. It is a very important asset for the company to have an athletic trainer who can serve as a gatekeeper to distinguish between personal injuries from injuries that occur at work.

The role of the Industrial Athletic Trainer starts the day early before 7:00am so they can lead dynamic warm-ups or engage their clients, evaluating any pre-existing or new injuries, this typically occurs prior to the start of the first shift. Building relationships, mutual respect and trust are all important for establishing a rapport of working together within one on one, health care solutions for injury, illness, referrals and fitness consultations. Provide injury prevention services that are compliant with OSHA requirements, and protocols based on statistics and monthly reports on time lost to injury. Document, and justify cost-effectiveness by providing quarterly reports and task specific educational programming based on specific demands of the clients job: climbing a telephone pole, digging and shoveling; welding with fire retardant gear. This may include a job task analysis, job risk assessment, and biomechanical assessment. In order to fully integrate with the client dress and safety gear is unique to the work setting, steel toe boots, jeans and a polo shirt, hard hat and safety glasses.

JAMA Study Shows Improved Hospital Admission and Readmission Rates Associated with Qualis Health-Initiated Project in Washington State

Title: JAMA Study Shows Improved Hospital Admission and Readmission Rates Associated with Qualis Health-Initiated Project in Washington State

Disease Illness JAMA Study Shows Improved Hospital Admission and Readmission Rates Associated with Qualis Health Initiated Project in Washington State

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) January 22, 2013

Researchers in the January 23rd issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) report that an effort initiated by Qualis Health in Whatcom County, Washington, reduced hospitalization rates by nearly 6% and readmission rates by nearly 7%. The authors assess efforts conducted by Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs) including Qualis Health in 14 select communities nationwide, and show that interventions aimed at improving care transitionswhen patients move from one care setting to another, such as from a hospital to their homeyielded significant results.

The study shows that hospitalizations and rehospitalizations among Medicare patients declined nearly twice as much in communities where QIOs coordinated interventions that engaged whole communities to improve care than in comparison communities. Qualis Health is one of the 14 state-based QIOs that received funding from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to participate in the project.

Despite initial hospitalization and rehospitalization rates that were the lowest among the 14 communities nationwide, the Washington State project showed that reductions are achievable even in a high-performing community like Whatcom County. And the results in Whatcom County are significantly better than three Northwest comparison communities that were not working with Qualis Health.

Improving hospital admission and readmission rates isnt only a hospital issue, says Jonathan Sugarman, MD, MPH, Qualis Health President and CEO, it requires coordination across the entire community to provide the right care for patients and families. We want to acknowledge the efforts of this projects participants and leaders across Whatcom County, including PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center, and congratulate them on this accomplishment.

Readmitting Medicare patients to the hospital within a month of discharge is a frequentand costlyoccurrence. Almost 25% of heart failure patients on Medicare, for example, are readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of discharge. The federal government says avoidable hospital readmissions cost the Medicare program billions of dollars a year. The QIOs work in this project shows a reduction in hospitalization and rehospitalization rates, which are vitally important for keeping Medicare beneficiaries as healthy as possible for as long as possible, said Patrick Conway, MD, MSc, CMS Chief Medical Officer and Director of the agencys Center for Clinical Standards & Quality. Thanks to QIOs, these communities created networks of clinicians, facilities, families, social services agencies, and others that share a common language in coordinating care for patientsthe communitys sickest and most vulnerable people. These communities effectively prevented hospitalizations, resulting in people being more likely to stay home and healthy.

In 2008, CMS selected Qualis Health and 13 additional QIOs to participate in a three-year project to use quality improvement strategies to improve care transitions for an entire community in their state. In the state of Washington, Qualis Health successfully engaged providers, patients and community partners across Whatcom County to reduce unnecessary rehospitalizations through Stepping Stones: Bridging Healthcare Gaps, the Care Transitions Project of Whatcom County. Working together, Qualis Health and the community met the projects goals, and the effort helped Whatcom County organizations successfully qualify in 2012 for federal Community-Based Care Transitions Program funding to continue the effort on behalf of their Medicare population.

As the QIO for Idaho and Washington, Qualis Health now provides resources and support for healthcare providers and community partners across the entire region, spreading the success of what worked in Whatcom County. In addition, Qualis Health is providing direct assistance to targeted communities that represent 57% and 85% of the Medicare population in Idaho and Washington, respectively, and 56% and 86% of each states Medicare hospital admissions.
